Virgin Australia's Uniform in 2011
Saturday, February 11, 2012
David Flynn, Australian Business Traveller - Created by Project Runway Australia winner Juli Grbac, the upmarket uniforms seem well-suited to Virgin's own push to woo business and corporate travellers, beginning with today’s launch of its new business class seating and a new fast-track Sydney lounge to speed premium passengers from kerbside to check-in gate.
Grbac says she wanted the new uniforms to be about “style, sophistication and old-world glamour.
“I had to work with Virgin’s red, silver and purple, so I decided to make the red a little richer and add the purple as a splash of colour in the silk scarves” Grbac explains.
She claims Virgin Blue CEO John Borgetti even had a hand in choosing the tie worn by male crew, which sports a splash of purple, as Borghetti “wears a lot of designer brands and has an eye for style”.
“I took inspiration from the glamour of flying in the 1960s, and gave it a contemporary edge” she said. “The guys said they actually feel like pilots now.”

Singapore Airlines - Gracious, elegant and friendly
Sunday, February 05, 2012
[Sammyboy.com, RonRon] Gracious, elegant, friendly - a few terms that come to mind when thinking of a Singapore Airlines (SIA) flight attendant, better known as the Singapore Girl. Yet, when The Straits Times Online met chief stewardess Jessie Keuk Suet Ching for this feature profile, the words passion, ambition and unpredictability encapsulate her as a Singapore Girl, 24 years after joining the airline.
For Ms Keuk, 44, unpredictability isn't just the thrill of travelling all over the world. Experiencing a myriad of cultures keeps her going. As she said: 'Every flight presents a new challenge and I enjoy that no day is ever the same.'
As a chief stewardess, Ms Keuk wears the vibrant red sarong kebaya. She is in charge of the leading stewardesses who don the green sarong kebayas as well as the flight stewardesses in the cobalt blue uniform, the most recognisable kebaya among the three rankings. This blue kebaya is most associated with the Singapore Girl's trademark look, that for this story, Ms Keuk wore it for ST Online's profile shot of her.
Ms Keuk's role as chief stewardess is to determine how the flight service is to be run and ensure that the inflight team provides excellent service according to the needs of each class. Besides her leadership responsibilities, Ms Keuk supervises the newest class on board the Airbus A380 - the Singapore Airlines Suites.
The exclusive nature of the Suites compared to the Business and Economy classes, requires the cabin crew to pay special attention to passengers, such as preparing the full-sized bed whenever passengers desire to rest. Prior to take-off, flight attendants carry out a final check - after earlier safety and security sweeps - to ensure there are no dangerous items on board. As Ms Keuk aptly put it: 'We are the last line of defence.'
The Airline: Xiamen Airlines
Friday, February 03, 2012
Xiamen Airlines is the first privately owned airline in the People's Republic of China. Established on July 25, 1984 and based in Xiamen, it operates scheduled passenger flights out of Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport and, to a lesser extent, Fuzhou Changle International Airport. The Airline is owned by China Southern Airlines (60%) and Xiamen Construction and Development Group (40%).
In December 2005, Xiamen Airlines inked an order for 10 Boeing 737-800 aircraft to be equipped with blended winglets, which were delivered between 2006 and 2008. This order was part of a larger 70 plane purchase agreement between CASGC and Boeing, which was signed during a state visit of then US President George W. Bush.
Initially the parent company China Southern Airlines planned to shift three Boeing 787 Dreamliners of an order for 13 to Xiamen Airlines, but this plan was dropped in 2006 in favor of more 737-800s.But on May 2011, Xiamen Airlines has been resumed to order 6 Boeing 787-8.
On June 8, 2011, Xiamen confirmed intentions to join SkyTeam Alliance. This move strengthens the alliance's position within Asia. The airline plans to join as early 2012.
On November 17, 2011, SkyTeam formally accepted the joining of Xiamen Airlines into the alliance. Xiamen Airlines begins the joining process leading to full entry into SkyTeam by the end of 2012, further strengthening the alliance offer in the southeast China region.
